The Aragonese costume will once again be the protagonist on October 12 in Zaragoza, and not only because of tradition. The Zaragoza City Council, through the Zaragoza Cultural Municipal Society, has convened the XIV Aragonese Costume Contest, with which it seeks to recognize those who best wear and use traditional clothing during the Offering of Flowers to the Virgen del Pilar. The call is part of some Fiestas del Pilar that will be held from October 10 to 18, 2026.
Participating is simple. In fact, you don’t even have to register in advance. Anyone can opt for the prizes as long as they participate in the Offering of Flowers and come with clothing that can be valued by the jury.
Throughout the day, between five and seven specialists in ethnography and traditional clothing will tour the Plaza del Pilar to observe the participants, both individually and in groups, and make a pre-selection. After the offering, the selected people will be informed and must give their consent to participate.
THREE CATEGORIES AND 1,500 EUROS IN PRIZES
The contest will distribute 1,500 euros in total, with three prizes of 500 euros: one for the female category, another for the male and a special prize. The latter offers a particularly striking possibility, since it can be awarded to a group, a man or a woman, and even to people who wear clothing that is not Aragonese, from any autonomous community or from other countries, provided that the set has special characteristics in the opinion of the jury.
To choose the winners, the specialists will pay special attention to the authenticity and plausibility of the costume, the correct use of the garments, the dignity and the brilliance of the outfit, as well as details such as the hairstyle or the use of old garments. The jury will be made up of professionals with accredited knowledge in the field and those who have interests related to the commercial manufacture of traditional clothing will not be able to participate.
The 500 euros of each prize will also have a specific destination. And it is that these must be used in the purchase of traditional clothing and be justified by an invoice to Zaragoza Cultural within a maximum period of two months from the delivery of the prize.
