The streets of Rubielos de Mora will be impregnated with the aroma of rosemary, the rattle of embers and the bustle of merchants with its XXXVII Medieval Weekend, from August 20 to 23. During these days, the town of Teruel will recover the atmosphere of more than six centuries ago, with its squares and historic corners converted into the scene of markets, performances, music and medieval traditions.
The dramatized visit «Rubielos in the war of the two Pedros» by Bureo Teatro will make the audience experience the historical context of the time in a light and entertaining way. The historic center itself will be the setting for the performance, taking advantage of its streets, squares and corners to recreate one of the most convulsive episodes in the history of the town.
At nightfall, the Local Assembly of the Spanish Association Against Cancer will organize a solidarity torchlight parade through the historic complex, a luminous welcome to the merchants who begin to arrive in Rubielos. The artisans will set up their stalls and prepare tools, products and merchandise so that everything is ready the next day.
MEDIEVAL WEEKEND PROGRAMME
On Friday, the market will open its doors. About 70 artisans, from Rubielos, the region and different parts of Spain, will occupy the streets with their workshops and products. Food, carpentry, pottery and other traditional trades, some of which are now practically extinct, will restore the appearance and atmosphere of its historical roots.
Friday night will also bring stories and legends. The youngest members of the house will perform «The legend of Alonso de Rubielos and Fátima de Mora» by the Children’s Theatre Group of Bureo Teatro, made up of about twenty young people. And, when midnight arrives, it will be the turn of the jubilee bull, in its children’s version of the wheelbarrow, heir to the tradition of the embolado bull.
On Saturday morning, music will accompany the parade of Esfuriatronadas Folk, which will travel the path between the Town Hall and the Plaza del Carmen. There will take place «The Deliberation of the Temple», a recreation with the Knights Templar as protagonists. At midnight on Saturday the jubilee bull will once again concentrate hundreds of visitors.
In the afternoon, the activity will move to the fish market of the Town Hall, where the performance of «The Market Thief» will take place, closing a theatrical program in a few days in which the streets, squares and historic buildings of Rubielos will once again become the stage of a medieval town full of characters, music, craftsmanship and legends.
