Zaragoza will take a new step towards decarbonisation with the start-up of a fifth-generation heating network that will replace the current natural gas boilers and supply heating and hot water to 192 homes. The project, called NeutralPath, will receive a grant of 467,722 euros from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) and will involve a total investment of 1.78 million euros.
The new infrastructure will use hydrothermal energy through water-to-water heat pumps and will also extend the supply to the María Urrea Nursery School, the CEIP José Antonio Labordeta and the changing rooms of the football field of the Siglo XXI Sports Center. The aim is to replace the use of natural gas with a system based on renewable and high-efficiency energies, thus reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
The action is part of an aid package from the IDAE that totals 1,383,222 euros and will allow the City Council to mobilize more than 2.9 million euros in projects related to renewable energies, energy efficiency and the decarbonization of public services.
MORE AID FOR MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS AND ENERGY COMMUNITIES
The largest subsidy, of 665,700 euros, will be allocated to four energy modernization actions of municipal buildings, with an overall investment of 907,326 euros. These include the modernization of the thermal installations of La Azucarera, the renovation of the air conditioning of the La Piraña Nursery School and the replacement of equipment with high-efficiency heat pumps in other municipal facilities.
The Zaragoza City Council has also obtained 249,800 euros to create a Community Transformation Office that will advise citizens, companies and entities on the implementation of energy communities and collective self-consumption projects. The service will pay special attention to rural neighbourhoods and will also promote initiatives to combat energy poverty.
These funds come from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union-NextGenerationEU, and the REPowerEU programme. The Zaragoza City Council also has pending resolution another request from Moves III 2025 to incorporate plug-in electric and fuel cell vehicles into the municipal fleet.
