[EN] The DGT changes the rules for scooters: this obligation will arrive on October 1

Users of personal mobility (PMV) vehicles, including electric scooters, will have to incorporate a new security measure as of October 1. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced that they must wear a reflective vest when driving at night or when visibility conditions are reduced.

The measure will begin to be applied with the entry into force of the modification of the General Traffic Regulations and is in addition to the regulatory changes that have affected these vehicles in recent years. The DGT has communicated this new obligation through its social networks.

NEW RULES FOR ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

The use of electric scooters has recently incorporated other novelties. In 2026, the DGT launched the Register of Light Personal Vehicles, in which owners must register their PMVs to obtain the corresponding registration certificate and the number that will allow the vehicle to be identified.

In addition to this measure, the certification of the models is added. From January 22, 2024, all PMVs that are marketed must be certified and meet the requirements established in the Manual of Characteristics of Personal Mobility Vehicles.

Scooters marketed until January 21, 2024 can continue to circulate without this certificate until January 22, 2027. From that date, only PMVs that have the corresponding certification will be able to circulate.
