Former Prime Minister José María Aznar will travel to Ceuta on Thursday to meet with the president of the autonomous city, Juan Jesús Vivas, in the midst of the migration crisis following the massive entry of people from Morocco at the end of July.
As reported by the Popular Party, Aznar will go to the Ceuta City Council at 12.45 p.m. accompanied by the PP’s Deputy Secretary of Finance, Housing and Infrastructure, Juan Bravo. There both will hold a meeting with Vivas and later participate in an institutional act.
The visit of the former president comes at a particularly delicate time for the autonomous city. On Tuesday, 25 August, the government declared the situation of interest for national security in Ceuta and launched a single command to coordinate the management of the crisis.
The situation has been dragging on since the massive entries registered on July 30 and 31 from Morocco. Vivas has warned in recent weeks of the pressure on the city and has called for measures to deal with the permanence of thousands of migrants in Ceuta.
THE CEUTA CRISIS SETS THE POLITICAL AGENDA
The management of the crisis has also increased political tension between the government and the opposition. The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has demanded this Wednesday the immediate convening of the Official Secrets Commission of the Congress to address what happened in Ceuta.
In addition, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will appear on September 3 in Congress to give explanations about the migratory crisis, after the Board of Spokespersons has brought forward the date initially proposed.
