[EN] Miguel Izaguerri, taxi driver from Zaragoza: «We are not asking to persecute VTCs, only those that break the law»

In response to complaints from the taxi sector of Zaragoza that VTC drivers do not comply with the rules and are not punished as harshly as possible, this Wednesday the Provincial Autotaxi Association of Zaragoza has sat down to negotiate with the Government of Aragón and with the Zaragoza City Council for a new regulation.

Its president, Miguel Izaguerri, has stated that taxi drivers are not asking to «persecute VTCs for being VTCs», but that what they are looking for is that «the law is complied with». He added that the current regulations that date back to 2025 «have been a little lame» and therefore they ask to «tweak it to give more weapons to agents so that they can act legally with more security».

OBLIGATIONS OF TAXI DRIVERS AND VTCS

«The taxi complies with its obligations on a daily basis and we want these platforms that carry out passenger transport in the city, to also comply with theirs,» said Izaguerri, who also shared that the works in the city are being «a problem» for the sector but that it is already being addressed with «good will» in meetings every 15 days with the Zaragoza City Council.

He also valued the «predisposition» of the Minister of Development, Octavio López, to create a working group in which to transform his proposals into a new regulation. However, he said that they do not give him a «blank cheque» because «we have to continue working on this issue».

It is expected, as shared by the Minister of Development Octavio López, that a new «more explanatory» resolution will be published in September that allows «coexistence between these two transport systems» in which the rights of both are recognized and respected and that «when someone fails to comply with the rules, they can act forcefully».

With this mission, a working commission has been set up «immediately» where taxi drivers can present their proposals, which López has described as «reasonable, very coherent and very responsible». Among them, there is greater clarity in the penalties and sanctions compared to those now in force with the 2025 regulations.

The Minister of Environment and Mobility of the Zaragoza City Council, Tatiana Gaudes, who also attended the meeting, showed her predisposition: «We are going to continue working and accompanying this important sector in the economic revitalization of the city of Zaragoza and with which we continue to collaborate so much».
