A boat with 62 migrants on board disembarked this Wednesday in Cala del Barco, in Cartagena, to the surprise of bathers who were on the beach. The arrival took place around 1:00 p.m. and several people alerted 112 when they observed how the boat was approaching the coast.
According to data provided by the Government Delegation in Murcia, 45 men, two women and 15 minors, all of them men, were traveling on the boat. The occupants, apparently of Algerian nationality, were in good health and were treated by the Red Cross.
THE MIGRANTS DISEMBARKED DIRECTLY ON THE BEACH
The boat approached a few meters from the shore and its occupants jumped into the water to reach land. The scene caused surprise among the people who were in the cove and some bathers quickly left the beach.
Once the disembarkation took place, the boat went back into the sea and moved away from the coast. Agents of the Civil Guard later went to the scene after receiving the warnings made by citizens.
THE MAYOR CALLS FOR MORE VIGILANCE ON THE COAST
The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has called on the central government for more human and technological resources to detect this type of vessel before it reaches the coast. The mayor has also called for a «serious, orderly and safe» migration policy and has called for intensified surveillance on the coasts of the municipality.
