The strong storms that have affected several Aragonese towns over the weekend have left a scene of real shock in Alcañiz this Sunday. A lightning strike has hit the building in which the El Gallego bar is located and has caused the detachment of tiles and debris, which have ended up falling on the terrace of the establishment. Fortunately, just a few minutes before those responsible had collected awnings and umbrellas and all the customers were already inside the premises.
The event occurred around 6:30 p.m., as the owner of the bar, Iván López, told Aragón Digital. «When the storm comes, there is always a risk that they will fly away or the awnings will break, so we pick them up. Fortunately, when it happened, people were all inside,» he explains.
The impact was immediate and very spectacular. «A very loud bang was heard, and when people wanted to notice and turned around, the terrace was in dust,» López recalls. The lightning struck the roof and caused «debris, tiles and everything» to fall, some of which ended up on the tables of the bar and on the terrace of a house located on the first floor.
NO INJURIES AND WITH THE BAR ALREADY BACK TO NORMAL
Despite the spectacular nature of the incident, no one was injured and the windows of the establishment were not broken either. «It was hearing the lightning and immediately the blow. We turned around and everything was already undone,» says the owner. «That’s the most important thing,» he adds, recalling that no customer was abroad at that time.
López also highlighted the quick response after the scare. «People have come to help, to collect the debris and to make sure that nothing was going to fall on the roof,» he explains. The owner says he is «very grateful» for the collaboration and confirms that this Monday the bar had already returned to normal.
