The Aljafería will face two major actions in the coming years to preserve and improve the Palace: the complete restoration of the Staircase of the Catholic Monarchs and the renovation of the air conditioning and electricity installations. Both interventions will involve an investment of more than nine million euros.

These works will be added to other actions that are already underway within the Aljafería Viva Plan, such as the partial redevelopment of the Patio de las Cortes, the rehabilitation of the Troubadour Tower, the restoration of plasterwork and wooden carpentry and the comprehensive reform of the toilets for public use.

CONSERVATION OF THE STAIRCASE OF THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS

The action on the Staircase of the Catholic Monarchs seeks to guarantee its structural stability, maintain aesthetic coherence and improve the functionality of the space. The works will preserve the historical finishes and adapt the staircase to the current demands of use and safety.

For its part, the renovation of the air conditioning and electricity installations will be carried out in eight phases over the next four years and will have an investment of more than eight million euros. Both actions have been approved this Wednesday by the Bureau of the Cortes, which considers that they represent «a qualitative leap in planning, conservation and investment in the heritage of the Aljafería».

The institution recalls that «the Cortes are today temporary depositories of this historical asset and that their responsibility is to guard, maintain and improve it to deliver it in better conditions to the citizens of the future». The Aljafería Palace has been declared a National Monument since 1931 and has been part of the World Heritage Site since 2001.
