Aragon will receive this summer the visit of two of the most representative young groups of the British music scene: the Wigan Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. They will offer four free concerts with free admission until full capacity is reached in different towns in the community: Huesca, Borja, Magallón and Zaragoza.
The tour will begin on Wednesday, July 22 at 8:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Huesca, where the Wigan Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform. It will continue on Thursday, July 23 at 9:00 p.m. at the Cervantes Theater-Cinema in Borja, with a concert starring the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Subsequently, both groups will share the stage on Friday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ramón Salvador Auditorium in Magallón and on Saturday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. in the Eduardo del Pueyo Auditorium in Zaragoza, offering a program that will combine symphonic repertoire and jazz.
The Wigan Youth Symphony Orchestra, created in 1975 and integrated within the Music Service of the Wigan City Council, the ensemble develops an intense educational and concert activity, performing regularly at the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Festival of Music for Youth, as well as touring internationally.
The orchestra will be conducted by Richard Waldock, conductor and double bass player with an extensive career with groups such as The Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Its repertoire will cover pages of British and European inspiration with works by Malcolm Arnold, Percy Grainger, William Walton, Emmanuel Chabrier and Hamish McCunn, among other composers.
For its part, the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra is one of the most prestigious young bands in the United Kingdom. Awarded on numerous occasions and with intense international activity, she has shared the stage with figures such as James Morrison, Eric Marienthal, Bill Watrous or Bobby Shew, in addition to having released eleven albums and performing regularly at national and international festivals.
Under the direction of David J. Little, the group will offer a programme that will cover great classics of jazz, swing, funk and pop, with arrangements of well-known songs such as Fantasy, Isn’t She Lovely, Watermelon Man, Birdland or Welcome to the Jungle, showing the versatility and energy of one of the best young British bands.
This tour is a new opportunity to bring the Aragonese public closer to the work carried out by these groups, whose objective is to combine musical excellence with the artistic and personal training of young performers.
