Again, scammers want to make their own August. The Spanish Association of Consumers has warned of a new fraud, this time, related to PayPal after receiving several warnings from users during these days.Citizens receive an email stating that «anomalous activity has been detected in their PayPal account. To ensure the safety of your profile and funds, some functionalities have been temporarily limited.»
Scammers try to give credibility to the supposed block with several possible causes. The message points to an attempted access from an unrecognized device, an unusual geographic location, or multiple recently recorded authentication errors. In this way, those responsible for the fraud play on the user’s fear of being the victim of an attack.
THE MESSAGE ASKS TO CONFIRM THE IDENTITY
The email then asks to «confirm your identity as soon as possible to restore full access to your e-wallet.» The error would occur when providing the access data to PayPal, since that information would remain in the hands of the fraudsters.
The Consumer Association once again asks citizens to «use common sense» to avoid falling into these frauds. It also demands that possible new types of fraud related to this issue be reported.
WHAT TO DO AFTER RECEIVING THE NOTICE
If they have not made the charge shown in the message, users should not call the indicated phone number or pay attention to other related SMS messages.
If you have fallen into the trap, the Consumer Association recommends changing online banking passwords and cancelling operational cards to block possible fraudulent charges.
