Presided over by the castle of the Calatravos and with a historic center declared a Historic-Artistic Site, Alcañiz will be one of the municipalities of Teruel where the solar eclipse 2026 It can be seen in all its magnitude on August 12. Its location within the totality strip will allow you to enjoy one of the most important astronomical phenomena of the century from the heart of the Lower Aragon.
In addition to this privileged situation, there is another attraction for those who decide to come to the city during the day: Alcañiz will have one of the seven official observation points set up in Aragon, located at MotorLand Aragón, an alternative for those who prefer to follow the phenomenon from a space prepared to receive visitors.
THE ECLIPSE FROM ALCAÑIZ
Those who wonder at what time the eclipse will be seen in Alcañiz will be able to start observing the phenomenon at 7:35:37 p.m., when the partial phase will begin. The eclipse will end at 9.03.23 p.m., practically coinciding with sunset.
Totality will begin at 20.29.37 hours and will end at 20.31.10 hours, leaving 93 seconds of total darkness. The moment of maximum occultation will come at 8:30 p.m.24 hours, when the Moon will completely cover the solar disk and will allow the total eclipse 2026 to be contemplated with a 100% occultation.
The low height of the Sun during those minutes will make it advisable to choose open spaces with good visibility towards the western horizon. In addition to the official MotorLand Aragón point, the surroundings of the municipality offer different clear places to follow the phenomenon. As in any sun observation, it will be essential to wear approved glasses during the partial phases and remove them only for the duration of totality.
WHAT TO VISIT IN ALCAÑIZ DURING THE GETAWAY
The Plaza de España concentrates some of the most representative buildings of the city, such as the Renaissance Town Hall and the medieval Lonja. Under the current tourist office, there are also old passages that remind us of the importance of Alcañiz during the Middle Ages. Among its religious heritage are the former collegiate church of Santa María and the churches of the Piarists, Carmen and San Francisco.
