The second day of the Debate on the state of the City has once again shown a certain harmony between Popular Party and Vox in a good part of the votes, although he has also made clear the differences that both formations have on specific issues and more so now that both see the next municipal elections in 2027 on the horizon. The best example has been the approval of five of the six proposals defended by Eva Torres’ party thanks to the support of the municipal government, including the implementation of a system of access to protected housing and social rent inspired by the principle of national priority.
The initiative, which replicates the agreement reached between PP and Vox in the Government of Aragon, has gone ahead with the favorable votes of the PP. The proposal proposes that the City Council adapt, within current legislation, the criteria for access to protected housing to give preference to those who prove a prolonged roots in the territory.
FIVE OUT OF SIX PROPOSALS APPROVED
In addition to the housing initiative, Vox has managed to move forward with the declaration of the third phase of Navarra Avenue as a priority, the promotion of the air conditioning of schools and institutes in collaboration with the Government of Aragon and the central executive, a Strategic Plan for Metropolitan Mobility Zaragoza 2050 and a strategy to adapt Zaragoza’s treatment system to new European requirements.
However, the agreement between the two groups has not been total. The Popular Party has voted against the proposal to build a high-rise car park in Las Fuentes and enable new provisional parking lots in the neighborhood, an initiative that has only received the support of the PSOE. That is why, after the session, the Vox spokeswoman regretted that the municipal government has «abandoned the residents of Las Fuentes» and defended that urban reforms must be accompanied by the maintenance of parking spaces so as not to harm the quality of life of residents.
AN ALLIANCE WITH NUANCES
The Debate has once again reflected that PP and Vox continue to share positions on a large part of the strategic issues of the City Council, although they also staged differences during the votes. The PP have backed five of Vox’s six proposals, while Eva Torres’ party has supported most of the government’s initiatives, but stood out on some of them, such as the study to plan Zaragoza’s mobility over the next decade or administrative simplification measures.
For her part, the mayor, Natalia Chueca, closed the Debate by thanking all the municipal groups for their participation and described the two days as an «exercise in democratic health». In addition, he assured that the Government of Zaragoza will continue to work «with humility to listen to the residents, with firmness to decide what is best for the city and with transparency to be accountable».
