Discover why the saint’s day of July 17 is dedicated to St. Alexius of Rome

El santoral cristiano tiene su origen en la tradición de recordar cada día a los santos y beatos.

The Catholic saint’s day remembers St. Alexius of Rome, one of the most unique figures in the Christian tradition for his life of humility, renunciation and dedication to God. His feast day keeps alive the memory of a saint whose story has inspired generations of the faithful.

The saint’s day offers the opportunity to learn about the lives of men and women who left a deep mark on the history of the Church. July 17 is dedicated to St. Alexius of Rome, whose figure symbolizes the detachment from material goods and the search for a life marked by simplicity and faith.

SAINT ALEXIUS OF ROME

Saint Alexius of Rome lived between the fourth and fifth centuries and, according to tradition, belonged to a noble and well-to-do family in the capital of the Roman Empire. Shortly after getting married, he decided to leave home to dedicate his life to God, renouncing his privileges and living as a pilgrim.

After spending several years in the East dedicated to prayer and charity, he returned to Rome without revealing his identity. There he was welcomed as a poor man in his own parents’ house, where he lived for years in anonymity, enduring hardships and humiliations without making himself known.

Tradition has it that only after his death was it discovered who he really was thanks to a writing he carried with him. Since then, St. Alexius of Rome has been venerated as an example of humility, sacrifice and trust in God, and the Church celebrates his feast day every July 17.

WHY ARE SAINTS CELEBRATED?

The Christian saint’s day has its origin in the tradition of remembering the saints and blesseds recognized by the Church every day. These commemorations value the life and testimony of people who stood out for their faith and for the example they left throughout their lives.

With the passage of time, the celebration of saints was also linked to the name day, so that many people celebrate their saint on the day on which the Church remembers the saint from whom they received their name. This custom is still deeply rooted in many countries with a Christian tradition.
