Workshops, a photography exhibition and a guided observation of the Sun star this Saturday, July 18, in the conference «Teruel looks at the sky: astronomy and science for all», organized to bring astronomy closer to the general public eclipse solar from August 12 to the residents of Caudé and to awaken interest in astronomy among people of all ages.
The activity, promoted by the Caudé Neighborhood Association, Caelum, is one of the initiatives that this year have the support of the Institute of Teruel Studies (IET) of the Teruel Provincial Council, within the call for Cultural and Scientific Activities. Its promoters explain that the project was born «from the conviction that science and technology must reach all corners of Aragón», especially the smallest and rural populations that have historically had more limited access to scientific culture.
The initiative aims to bring astronomy closer to the general public, a science that often seems reserved for experts despite having been linked to the history of humanity. The objective is to eliminate that feeling that it is inaccessible knowledge and to awaken curiosity about the Universe, learning little by little, calmly, in free time, anywhere and at any time.
ACTIVITIES TO DISCOVER ASTRONOMY
The project will include three activities. The first will be a science and crafts workshop for children, in which handmade rockets will be made with recycled materials and the different propulsion elements will be explained, from a scientific point of view. To participate it will be necessary to register in advance through the email of the Caudé Neighborhood Association: avvcaude@gmail.com.
The day «We Prepare for the eclipse» will also be held, in which participants of all ages will be able to learn curiosities about the Sun, discover the magic of an eclipse and learn how it will affect the eclipse of August 12, 2026, as well as identify the challenges and opportunities it poses.
Finally, there will be a guided observation of the Sun that will begin with an introductory talk and will continue with the observation using special telescopes, binoculars and specific glasses for the eclipse. During the activity, the risks and protection measures necessary to observe the Sun will be explained, as well as offering details about the star and the next eclipse. At the end, a photograph of the Sun will be taken by attaching the mobile phone to the telescope.
SUPPORT FOR LOCAL INITIATIVES
The Institute of Teruel Studies supports local projects through two calls for grants in 2026: Research, Development and Innovation Projects (R+D+i) and Cultural and Scientific Dissemination Activities (ADCC). In the Research, Development and Innovation call, six projects have been selected from the 17 presented. For its part, in the call for cultural and scientific dissemination activities, five works have been chosen from among the 13 presented.
Among the topics of the projects are research on art, paleontology, tourism and business competitiveness, among others. This year, the economic amount of each Research, Development and Innovation project has increased to 5,000 euros. In the case of cultural and scientific dissemination activities, the aid has been increased to 3,000 euros.
