A 13-year-old boy died early this morning in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca) after part of a fountain collapsedin which numerous people were celebrating the victory of Spain in the World Cup. The accident has also left several people injured, although for the moment their condition has not been revealed.
The event took place at around 00.33 am at the fountain of the Glorieta del Árbol Gordo, one of the usual places of celebration in the town. Part of the structure gave way and fell on several of the people who were concentrated in the area.
As reported by the Emergency Service 112 of Castilla y León, members of the Local Police, the Civil Guard, the Firefighters of the Provincial Council of Salamanca and Health Emergencies-Sacyl were dispatched to the scene. The minor was transferred to the Ciudad Rodrigo health center, where he finally died as a result of his injuries.
The Psychological Intervention Group in Disasters and Emergencies was activated to attend to the victim’s relatives. The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo has decreed three days of official mourning, between this Monday and Wednesday, while the circumstances of the collapse are investigated.
