Amazon takes a big step towards the implementation of its data center in La Cartuja Baja. The Aragonese Institute of Environmental Management has approved the environmental authorisation for this infrastructure that is planned to be built in the Empresarium industrial estate.

The campus will house seven main data storage buildings, two electrical substations and a photovoltaic plant for floating self-consumption on water. The creation of 210 direct jobs is expected and will occupy 167,035 square meters.

This data center is part of the first expansion of the American multinational in Aragon, which includes four more: two in Villanueva de Gállego, one in El Burgo and another in Huesca (Walqa). Three data centers have already been in operation in these locations since 2022.

This year Amazon announced a third phase of expansion with two new sites: San Mateo de Gállego and La Puebla de Híjar, as well as another data center in Huesca. This new phase brings the total investment to 33,700 million euros. It also plans to build in Aragón a factory dedicated to the assembly, logistics and final testing of servers.

This resolution imposes strict conditions, highlighting that the center must operate with 100% renewable energy by 2030. With regard to water, the main supply will come from the Imperial Canal of Aragon with a maximum authorised flow of 204,697 m³/year. In addition, the company is obliged to implement refrigeration systems that allow recirculation in up to five cycles to maximize the efficiency of the resource.

As for the energy supply, an estimated annual consumption of 3,279.97 GWh is calculated. In comparison, Aragon consumed 10,659 GWh during 2025. The demand for this data center is a third of what is consumed by the entire community, which magnifies the resources needed for these infrastructures.

To offset the carbon footprint, a floating photovoltaic plant will be installed for self-consumption, which will be installed on its water reserve. This solar infrastructure will have a power of 5,750 kW and will be made up of a total of 11,656 photovoltaic modules.

With this approval, the project is only pending the final approval of the PIGA to begin its construction phase. In addition, a countdown has begun: the works must begin in the next four years before this environmental impact statement expires.
