The Sicilian ruins and the Etna volcano as a backdrop make up one of the most spectacular productions of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. This opera, filmed at the Teatro Greco in Taormina, arrives next Thursday, July 23 at the Aragonia Cinemas and the Sala Cervantes. It will be screened in another 55 cinemas, spread over 47 locations in Spain.
This is the second title of the summer festival «óh!pera Summer» in its 2026 edition. Unlike traditional productions in closed theatres, this Aida takes advantage of the thousand-year-old architecture of the Greek theatre of Sicily. A unique cinematic experience where the cameras captured not only the dramatic intensity of the soloists, but also the imposing presence of Mount Etna.
Directed on stage by Enrico Castiglione, the Italian director devised a production designed for the great amphitheatre, which has become an essential part of the show. He achieves images of enormous visual impact, thanks to a spectacular staging through projections on the ruins, visual effects, and the openness to the Sicilian landscape.
SOLID VERDIAN CAST
The performance brings together a very solid cast made up of singers identified with the traditional Italian repertoire: the spinto tenor Salvatore Licitra, as Radamès, in one of his last performances before his death, which gives the film a special documentary value; the Belgian-Congolese soprano Isabelle Kabatu, in the role of Aida; the Italian mezzo-soprano Rossana Rinaldi, such as Amneris; and one of the great Spanish baritones, Juan Pons, in the role of Amonasro. The musical direction is in charge of the Italian Fabio Mastrangelo, with the Orchestra Nazionale dei Conservatori di Musica and the Francesco Cilea Lyric Choir.
The 149-minute production, sung in Italian, is part of the fourth edition of the «óh!pera Summer» festival. A cultural and leisure proposal in the Event Cinema format that allows you to experience opera productions filmed in open-air theatres from cinemas. The distributor Versión Digital is the organizer of this proposal for cinemas in Spain.
