The gardeners are filled with pride when talking about their crops, and now their tomatoes can have a prize thanks to the II Provincial Contest of Tomatoes of Zuera. The appointments, framed in the «Zuera Sabor» conference, will take place on August 21 and 22, rewarding the best tomatoes of the two modalities in which the contestants can participate: old tomato and new generation tomato. The contest is an initiative promoted by the< href="https://www.aragondigital.es/tags/dpz/" target="_blank">DPZ and the Zaragoza Gourmet.
Participation is open to both amateurs and professionals; the only requirement is that the tomatoes have been grown in orchards located within the province of Zaragoza. Registration is free and the prizes are 300 euros in cash per modality. Each participant can deliver six tomatoes and they will have five passes to discover the versatility of this product, explained the Councilor for Culture of Zuera, María José Guzmán.
The director of El Gastrónomo, Miguel Ángel Vicente, said that the contest highlights and publicizes the agri-food product: «We want to talk about these products that are so recognized by some, but so unknown by others.» He explained that the contest was born with the desire to recognize quality tomatoes, from the garden and locality.
Ángel Vicente highlighted: «We want this contest to come to old products that are still scattered throughout the province.» Among these tomato varieties, he adds, there is a commitment in the contest to recover the Zaragoza tomato, which was the winner of last year’s contest. «The final reason is to bring the population closer to tomatoes, not only Zuera but also Zaragoza,» said the director.
Participants will have to deliver the tomatoes during the morning of August 21 at the Zuera Coexistence Center and, the next day, the doors of the exhibition will open. In addition to the exhibition, the centre will host two presentations: Cristina Mayor, arrives with her talk «Tomatoes in the Germoplsama Bank and the recovery of the Zaragozano variety»; and Amparo Llamazares, with «All tomatoes are not the same».
He also added that they hope to exceed last year’s participation and continue consolidating this event in the province. From the City Council of Zuera, they encourage everyone to come to Zuera, to enjoy the contest, the conferences and everything that the town has to offer.
