A total of 22 new resident medical intern specialists (MIR) today held the ceremony to complete five years of training at the Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza. This group of 22 doctors is part of the last COVID class, which began its training in the summer of 2021 in the midst of two strong waves of the pandemic.

The head of studies at Servet, Víctor Solano, recalled that these were very complicated times to combine the pressure of care in those months with the training of the new promotions, for which he thanked tutors and residents for their involvement in completing a training stage that has allowed the new 22 specialists to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to exercise autonomously.

Due to the pandemic, the incorporation of new resident interns (MIR) into health centres was carried out exceptionally and gradually. The division of the groups was carried out according to the years of training.

The residents who now complete their resident training belong to eleven specialties:A Psychology and Vascular Surgery (1), Cardiology (3), General and Digestive System Surgery (2), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1), Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (3), Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (2), Thoracic Surgery (1), Intensive Medicine (2), Internal Medicine (3), Medical Oncology (2) and Urology (2).

The Deputy Medical Director of Teaching, Mercedes Ruiz de Temiño, congratulated the new specialists and reminded them that, during these years of training, they have learned that «Medicine is not only scientific knowledge, but also requires the ability to listen, understand and accompany patients in the most vulnerable moments of their lives». Ruiz de Temiño stressed that excellence in care is always the result of effort and teamwork, and encouraged them to never stop learning and to always maintain «absolute respect for each patient».

Next, the deputy director gave the floor to the specialist María Barrera, who has completed her training in Intensive Medicine. Barrera began his speech by recalling a quote from the illustrious doctor Santiago Ramón y Cajal: «Every man can be, if he sets his mind to it, a sculptor of his own brain», and he established a parallelism between the formative period and this process of personal and professional construction.

Finally, the Head of Studies, Víctor Solano, thanked the critical spirit provided by the new generations of residents and the continuous updating that their presence demands, not only from professionals, but also from the care processes themselves.
