[EN] Trees, rural neighbourhoods and public transport: ZeC saves part of its proposals for the Debate

Zaragoza en Común has managed to carry out this Friday part of the initiatives it defended during the second day of the Debate on the state of the City. Although its main proposals on housing, social services or local commerce were rejected, the municipal group has obtained the support of the Plenary for several measures related to trees, mobility and rural neighborhoods.

Among the measures approved is the priority to plant trees in public schools that still have empty tree pits or dead specimens, an initiative that ZeC has framed in the need to strengthen the city’s adaptation to climate change. Several proposals on mobility have also been approved, such as guaranteeing truthful information on bus shelters, reinforcing pedestrian itineraries through participatory processes and speeding up the construction of bike lanes, eliminating sections that still have discontinuities.

In terms of rural neighbourhoods, the Plenary has supported another of its initiatives to urge the municipal government to maintain dialogue with the Provincial Council of Zaragoza and unblock a new agreement that allows financing investments and equipment in these population centres.

HOUSING AND SOCIAL SERVICES ARE LEFT OUT

Other of the most ambitious proposals defended by Zaragoza en Común have not suffered the same fate. The Plenary has rejected his plan to expand public rental housing and limit housing for tourist use, as well as the creation of a local income guarantee system, the increase in the budget for Social Services or a specific program to support basic commerce in rural neighborhoods.

After the session, Tomás has positively assessed the result of the Debate and has assured that the measures approved show that «a useful, rigorous and committed opposition can improve the lives of citizens». The spokeswoman has especially highlighted the support obtained for the initiatives on trees, mobility and rural neighborhoods, which, in her opinion, respond to demands transferred by neighborhood and social groups and represent «concrete commitments for the city».
