[EN] Will the tram arrive at Arcosur? Zaragoza commissions the study to decide it

A study has been commissioned from the University of Zaragoza to analyse high-capacity urban public transport options

The future of high-capacity public transport in the Aragonese capital is once again on the table. The City Council will commission the University of Zaragoza to carry out a study to define how to improve connections with the new neighbourhoods of the city, with two main axes as a priority: the arrival at Arcosur and a new East-West line between Delicias and San José.

The report, which will be prepared by the Transport and Logistics Research Group (Gitel), will analyse over the next four or five months the different technical, urban, functional and economic alternatives to determine which is the most appropriate option for future investments in high-capacity urban public transport.

Although there are still many aspects to be defined, what the mayor did want to make clear, Natalia Chueca, during the Debate on the state of the City in which this announcement has been made, is that the growth of Zaragoza forces mobility to be planned in the medium term. «The city of 800,000 people and new developments in the south, east and west require planning. I want the steps we take to be firm,» he said.

In this way, the study will serve as a basis for deciding on the next actions in the field of high-capacity transport and establishing a roadmap to improve mobility between the consolidated neighbourhoods and the new expansion areas of Zaragoza.

MORE CAPACITY FOR THE TRAM

Along with the study, it has also been specified that the Sociedad de Los Tranvías will begin the acquisition of two new units that will enter service in 2028 to reinforce Line 1 at times of greatest demand. With these additions, there will be four new trams incorporated into the network, which will increase the capacity of the line, the most used in Spain with more than 100,000 daily validations, by 20%, according to municipal data.
