The Zaragoza City Council will create the first Professional Municipal Conservatory of Music in the city, a historic claim of the educational community that will allow students to complete their training without having to go to other municipalities. It was one of the first announcements by the mayor, Natalia Chueca, during the first day of the Debate on the State of the City, in which she has advanced that the new center will be located in the Palafox Barracks and will open its doors in the 2027-2028 academic year.
The announcement is a further step in the municipal offer of musical education. Currently, the Municipal Elementary Conservatory of Music trains 284 students, but they must interrupt their studies at the end of the fourth year or continue their training outside Zaragoza. «The City Council is going to launch the Municipal Professional Conservatory of Music of Zaragoza that will be installed in the Palafox Barracks,» said the mayor.
Chueca has defended that the new center will allow «to develop musical and creative talent among young people» and has assured that it responds to a demand transferred for years by families. «From the 2027/2028 academic year, students will be able to continue their classes for four more years in response to what young people and their families have been demanding from us for a long time,» he said.
HISTORICAL DEMAND FROM THE MUSIC SECTOR
The creation of the professional conservatory puts an end to a claim sustained for years by the educational and musical community of Zaragoza. Until now, students who completed elementary education had a limited offer to continue their vocational training in the city, which in many cases forced them to move to other municipalities or abandon their studies.
With the incorporation of these teachings, it is hoped to complete the training itinerary already offered by the municipal conservatory and to take advantage of the investment made in the initial training of students, favoring that talent can develop in Zaragoza to reach a higher interpretive and artistic level.
In addition to its educational function, the new Professional Municipal Conservatory of Music will reinforce the city’s cultural programming. The center will host concerts, auditions, collaborations and performances open to the public, with the aim of expanding municipal musical activity and consolidating Zaragoza as a benchmark in artistic training.
