The reform of the Plaza San Miguel faces a new stage with the installation of the new canopies that will serve the urban bus lines when the work in the surroundings is completed. The image of the workers placing these structures adds to a transformation that still maintains a large part of the square in works, despite the fact that the road recovered traffic at the end of May.
The buses then returned to circulate through Plaza San Miguel within the new mobility scenario designed by the Zaragoza City Council, but they still do not make their stops there as they did before the start of the works. That is why many neighbors wonder when the works will end, as well as when they will recover the possibility of taking the bus in the same square.
A SQUARE STILL HALFWAY
The reopening of the road allowed circulation to recover for public services, residents and merchants, but the action is not yet finished. The sidewalks are still pending completion and pedestrians still do not have the definitive space that the square will have once the reform is completed, which includes expanding the pedestrian areas, incorporating vegetation and renewing the urban furniture.
The placement of the canopies takes place while the machines continue to work in the environment and the works are already concentrated in the third phase of the project, which affects the Coso. This stage will last until January 2027 and will advance from the section between San Miguel and Santa Catalina towards Josefa Amar and Borbón, in front of the Teatro Principal.
The project includes a comprehensive transformation of more than 15,700 square meters between the Paseo de la Independencia and the surroundings of Plaza San Miguel, with an investment of more than 7.2 million euros. The expected result will be a space with wider sidewalks, green areas, new furniture and renewed water, sanitation and lighting networks, in addition to maintaining the existing bike lane.
