[EN] From 124 to 58 births: this is how adolescent motherhood has changed in Aragon since 2013

Adolescent motherhood has lost weight significantly in Aragón in recent years. Births of babies to mothers between 15 and 19 years of age have been reduced by more than half compared to 2013 and this 2026 they once again mark one of the lowest records of the entire available series.

Between January and June 2026, 58 babies were born in Aragon to mothers between 15 and 19 years of age, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In the same period of 2013 there were 124, more than double. The fall in these thirteen years thus reaches 53.2%.

The evolution has not been completely linear, but the overall trend is clear. In the first half of 2013, 124 births to teenage mothers were recorded in Aragon. A year later they fell to 104 and in 2015 and 2016 they remained at 101. The decline became more evident from then on. In 2017 there were 76, although in 2018 they rose again to 94. In 2019, 83 were registered and in 2020 94 again.

From 2021 onwards, the figures remain clearly below those levels. That year there were 60 births, the same number as in 2022. In 2023 they increased slightly to 69 and in 2024 they were 67.

THE FIGURE FOR 2026 IS ALSO BETTER THAN A YEAR AGO

The fall continues this year. In the first half of 2025, 66 births were registered to mothers between 15 and 19 years of age, compared to the current 58.

This is eight fewer in just one year, which represents a reduction of close to 12%. In addition, the 2026 figure is even below the 60 births registered in both 2021 and 2022.

The comparison with the beginning of the series is even more significant: Aragon has gone from well over a hundred births to teenage mothers during the first six months of the year to below 60.

ZARAGOZA CONCENTRATES MOST OF THE CASES

By provinces, Zaragoza concentrates 42 of the 58 births registered between January and June 2026. Huesca adds 14 and Teruel only two.

The comparison with 2013 also shows a reduction in the three provinces. At that time, 84 births were counted in Zaragoza, 23 in Huesca and 17 in Teruel.

Especially striking is the case of Teruel, which has gone from 17 to only two births in the same period of the year, while Zaragoza has reduced its figure by exactly half, from 84 to 42.

A DOWNWARD TREND WITH SOME RALLIES

The INE series shows that the decline has not occurred year after year without interruptions. There were rebounds in 2018, 2020 or 2023, but none of them managed to recover the levels recorded at the beginning of the last decade.

Thus, the picture of 2026 leaves a clear difference compared to 2013: births to mothers between 15 and 19 years of age have gone from 124 to 58 in Aragon, a reduction of more than 53% and one of the lowest records in the entire series.
