The Tambores de Teruel Cultural Association has a very special appointment on the other side of the Mediterranean: the group will travel this Sunday to the Italian town of Ariano Irpino to participate in the Ariano Folk Festival. The festival is a benchmark event for roots music where they will bring the characteristic sound and rhythm of the drums and bass drums of Teruel.
This trip to Italian lands comes after the great reception that the presentation of his new work, «De tierra y tambor», had in the recent edition of the Poborina Folk. The association’s head of exhibitions, Miguel Quilez, has highlighted the novelty of the proposal that they are going to take to the neighboring country: «It is a kind of show, a little more different from what we usually do, of walking streets or playing on stage».
A show with which the Teruel group proposes a renewed look at the traditional touch, looking for a more agile and dynamic format, but keeping intact the energy, the bass drum and the drum as always. From the association, Quilez stresses, they look forward to the show: «This does not happen every year. We have gone out more times outside Spain, but it is the first time we have been called from Italy«.
For their appointment at the Ariano Folk Festival, the group has adapted its proposal to the dynamism and street format of this event, bringing the strength of the Teruel rhythm to the Italian public. Quilez highlighted: «The truth is that it is very gratifying for the association and for the world of drumming in Teruel. It is good that we leave our borders, and teach our traditions beyond Spain«.
The instruments also have to travel with the members of the association, says Quilez, so they have packed and checked about 10 bass drums and 20 drums so that they can fly with them. This Sunday’s performance is part of the different commitments and performances that the group has scheduled for the coming months such as the Buñuel Challenge, in Teruel.
