[EN] Two men die in the Huesca mountains, in a week with almost twenty rescues

The Huesca mountain has left two fatalities and 19 rescue interventions in just five days. Between Sunday 16 and Thursday 20, the mountain specialists of the Civil Guard have had to act practically continuously in different parts of the Pyrenees from Huesca due to falls, injuries, exhaustion, mountaineers and even an allergic reaction.

The most serious event in recent days occurred this Wednesday in the Colada de Pineta, in Bielsa, where a 56-year-old American hiker, a resident of Florida, lost his life after suffering a vertical fall. He was traveling with three other people, who were unharmed, but had to be treated due to the state of psychological block in which they were. The body was evacuated to Boltaña and later transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Zaragoza.

It was not the only death on the mountain this week. On Monday, a 63-year-old Frenchman died on the path of the Ganchos, in Hecho, possibly as a result of a heart attack. In addition to these two victims, there are numerous injured of varying degrees and several mountaineers who had to be evacuated by helicopter after being blocked in areas of difficult access.

FOUR RESCUES IN JUST SEVEN HOURS

The activity began on Sunday with four warnings between 11.30 and 18.00 hours. The first took the GREIM of Jaca to the Epífanio ravine, in Canfranc Estación, where a 48-year-old hiker and resident of Zaragoza suffered a fall and a contusion on her knee that prevented her from continuing. She was evacuated and later transferred to the Jaca Hospital.

Hours later, another hiker, 54 years old and a resident of Tarragona, had to be rescued in the Culivillas ravine, in Sallent de Gállego, after suffering a strong lumbar contusion. In the afternoon, a 26-year-old woman suffered a possible allergic reaction while traveling along the GR-11 near the Bachimaña refuge, with facial swelling and dizziness. She was evacuated by helicopter to Panticosa.

The day ended in Monte Perdido. A 33-year-old French citizen suffered a sprained ankle while traveling the normal route and managed to reach the Góriz refuge. From there he was evacuated by helicopter before being transferred to the Jaca Hospital.

A HEART ATTACK AND TWO RESCUES IN PIEDRAFITA

On Monday it started early again. At 8.20 am, a 65-year-old mountaineer and resident of Badalona had to be evacuated from the Cuello de Monte Perdido, in Fanlo, after suffering a fall that caused a possible shoulder dislocation and a rib contusion.

Later, two hikers aged 74 and 42 asked for help during the descent of the Escarpinosa lake towards Estós. The eldest of them had symptoms of severe dehydration and exhaustion, so the specialists transferred him to the car park, from where he went by his own means to a health centre.

The Piedrafita lake concentrated two other incidents. A 59-year-old woman from Madrid suffered a possible crack in her foot after a fall, while another hiker, 53 years old and a resident of Berga, fell into the river and hit her head, suffering a breach that needed assistance at the Escarrilla health center.

Between the two warnings, the most serious event of the day occurred. A 63-year-old Frenchman was located deceased on the path of Los Ganchos, in Hecho, after mobilizing the GREIM of Jaca, the Huesca Air Unit and 061 medics. The main hypothesis points to a possible heart attack.

TWO CLIMBERS TRAPPED IN THE SPIRES OF SALENQUES

Rescues moved on Tuesday especially to high mountain terrain. Two young people of 24 and 26 years old were entangled in the Agujas de Salenques, while they were performing the Salenques-Tempestades-Aneto Ridge. Both were unharmed and were evacuated to the Benasque helisurface.

Practically at the same time, another mountaineer suffered a slide down a slope on the Marboré lake, in Bielsa, which caused a deep cut on his foot. He was evacuated to the Pineta valley. Also in Bielsa, a 66-year-old Frenchman suffered a fall in the Pineta Tail and had to be transferred to the Barbastro Hospital with a head trauma and various contusions.

The last performance took place in the Cresta de Cregüeña, in Benasque. A 38-year-old climber suffered a possible ankle fracture and an open wound in her leg when she hit a stone that had moved. She was evacuated with her partner, who was unharmed, and later transferred to the Barbastro Hospital.

A FATAL FALL IN PINETA AND TWO MOUNTAINEERS

Wednesday was the day with the highest number of people involved. Early in the morning, two 23-year-old mountaineers from Tafalla had to be evacuated after being stranded near the False Breach of Rolando, in Fanlo. Both were unharmed. Shortly after, two other mountaineers were helped at the Góriz refuge after one of them, a 55-year-old man, injured his knee after a fall.

A new performance took the GREIM to the Llosas ridge, where two climbers needed help after one presented physical problems and vomiting. In the afternoon, a 67-year-old hiker and resident of Vitoria suffered a possible ankle sprain while walking along the GR-11 next to the Bachimaña refuge, for which he was transferred to the Jaca Hospital.

The most serious accident came at practically the same time in the Colada de Pineta. Four hikers were on a route when one of them fell vertically and suffered injuries incompatible with life. The victim was a 56-year-old American from Florida. His three companions were unharmed, although they were in a strong state of psychological block and had to be evacuated to the Parador de Bielsa.

THREE MOUNTAINEERS INJURED IN GÓRIZ

The last intervention reported by the Civil Guard during this period took place on Thursday morning at the Góriz refuge. Three mountaineers needed assistance after suffering different physical problems during their activity. The most serious case was that of a 63-year-old man from Olot, who had a possible sprain and fracture of the fibula after a fall on steep ground. He was evacuated and transferred to the Jaca Hospital.

The other two mountaineers also had to abandon the activity. A 29-year-old man had a muscle overload in the knee and a 47-year-old woman suffered a possible sprain in a ligament. Both were taken to the Ordesa meadow.
