Calatayud is preparing to say goodbye to August in a very special way. When night falls, some of its most recognizable monuments will completely change their appearance and the historic center will become a great outdoor stage. Ilumina Calatayud, the Festival of Light, returns on August 28 and 29 with more than 30 activities including lighting shows, music, fire, visits, exhibitions and gastronomic proposals.
For two nights, the light will serve as a common thread to discover Bilbao’s heritage in a different way. The Collegiate Church of Santa María, the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, San Pedro de los Francos or San Juan el Real will be some of the buildings that will take on a new life at nightfall, while concerts and cultural activities will be spread to other corners of the city.
The initiative, organized by the Department of Tourism of the City of Calatayud, seeks precisely to turn heritage into an experience. «Ilumina is designed for this city specifically,» explained the Councilor for Tourism, Esteban Sanmiguel, who stresses that the festival was also born as «one more reason to come to Calatayud».
Some proposals have limited capacity and require prior registration at the Tourist Office, such as the wine tasting organized by the La Dolores Association and Bodegas San Alejandro or the guided tour of the Museum of Sacred Art of the Collegiate Church of Santa María.
