In Aragon, babies are born every day who add names, families and new stories. But, when all those births are put together on the table, a curiosity arises: what is 2026 bringing, more boys or more girls? The first six months of the year already allow us to tip the balance towards one of the two sides, although the most interesting thing is how it has changed compared to just a year ago.
The latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) count 4,261 births in Aragon between January and June. Of these, 2,149 have been boys and 2,112 girls, only 37 difference. However, the evolution with respect to 2025 gives a twist to the result: the number of girls has increased by 74, while the number of boys has increased by only 21.
ARE MORE BOYS OR GIRLS BORN IN ARAGON?
The answer, at least for the first six months of 2026, is children. They represent approximately 50.4% of all births registered in Aragon, while girls account for 49.6%.
The difference, however, changes quite a bit depending on the month. In January, 399 girls and 372 boys were born, so they started the year ahead. In February there were 340 boys and 332 girls; in March, 367 compared to 349; in April, 345 compared to 319; and in May, 359 compared to 350. June again left a particularly tight result: 366 boys and 363 girls, only three births apart.
GIRLS ARE THE PROTAGONISTS OF THE INCREASE IN BIRTHS
Just because slightly more children are still being born doesn’t mean they’re driving growth this year. In fact, just the opposite is true. During the first half of 2025, 2,128 boys and 2,038 girls were born in Aragon. A year later, the number of children has increased to 2,149, which is 21 more.
In the case of girls, the growth has been much higher. It has gone from 2,038 to 2,112 births, that is, 74 more girls than a year ago. This means that, of the 95 additional births registered by Aragon compared to 2025, almost eight out of ten correspond to girls.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS IS NARROWING
This stronger increase in female births has also caused the distance between the sexes to be much smaller than a year ago. In the first half of 2025, 90 more boys than girls had been born. In 2026, the difference has been reduced to 37.
Thus, boys are still slightly in the majority among babies born in Aragon, but the growth of girls is bringing the figures closer and closer. The balance up to June leaves 2,149 boys compared to 2,112 girls, with them as the main protagonists of the increase in births registered this year.
