Aragon loses the demographic battle again: almost two deaths for every birth

Between January and June 2026, 4,261 babies were born in Aragon while, in the same period, approximately 7,076 deaths have been recorded

Aragon continues to add new babies, but on the other side of the demographic scale the figures are much higher. Deaths far exceed births in the Community in 2026, to the point that for every baby that has arrived in the world there have been about two deaths. A difference that once again puts on the table one of the great demographic challenges of Aragon.

The latest provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) allow us to compare both statistics. Between January and June 2026, 4,261 babies were born in Aragon. To make an equivalent comparison, until week 26 of the year, approximately 7,076 deaths had been counted. There are 2,815 more deaths than births in just half a year.

ALMOST 1.7 DEATHS FOR EVERY BABY BORN IN ARAGON

The comparison allows us to clearly measure the magnitude of that distance. For every baby born in Aragon during the first six months of 2026, there have been approximately 1.66 deaths. In other words, for every 100 births, around 166 deaths have been registered. Births thus represent only a part of the total volume of deaths registered in the Community.

The result leaves a clearly negative natural balance: Aragon loses population due to the difference between births and deaths. The evolution of births offers, however, a small positive change compared to 2025. Between January and June last year, around 4,166 babies had been born, compared to 4,261 in 2026.

There are 95 more births, which represents a growth of close to 2.3%. However, this increase is still too small to compensate for the volume of deaths. The data summarises the situation well: although more babies are born than a year ago, Aragon continues to register many more deaths than births.

A GAP OF 2,815 PEOPLE IN HALF A YEAR

The picture of the first semester is conclusive. Aragon has 4,261 births and 7,076 deaths between January and June, which leaves a difference of 2,815 people. This means that, even with the slight uptick in the birth rate, deaths still far exceed births in the Community.

The distance between the two figures once again puts the spotlight on one of Aragon’s great demographic challenges: generational renewal has not yet compensated for the number of deaths and the gap is still very wide in 2026.
