[EN] These are the basic foods that have risen the most in price during August

Potatoes lead the price rise in August, with 14%, ahead of conference pears and macaroni, according to Facua

Potatoes, conference pears and macaroni have been the foods affected by the VAT reduction that have become more expensive during the last month. Their prices have increased by an average of 14%, 3.2% and 3%, respectively, in large supermarkets.

Facua-Consumers in Action collects this data in a study that analyzes how prices have evolved between July and August 2026 in eight food chains. The analysis includes a selection of basic products such as fruits, vegetables, pasta, eggs, flours, lentils, rice, and olive and sunflower oils.

The report also shows that the price of a dozen eggs has soared by almost 9% in the last year, while sunflower oil and garlic have risen by 4.1% and 2.4% respectively since August 2025.

POTATOES GO UP 14% IN A MONTH

The potato mesh has registered an average price increase of 14% over the last month. The largest increase in August has occurred at Hipercor, where the five-kilo mesh has gone from 5.99 euros in July to 7.75 euros in August, 29.4% more.

The kilo of conference pears, meanwhile, has risen by 3.2% in recent weeks. Carrefour recorded the sharpest increase, with an increase of 20.3%, going from 2.12 euros in July to 2.55 euros in August. The package of macaroni costs on average 3.0% more than a few weeks ago. The largest increase corresponds to the De Cecco brand in Carrefour, where it has gone from 2.59 euros in July to 2.85 euros in August, 10.0% more.

According to Facua’s analysis, during this same period the price of sunflower oil (2.8% on average), orange netting (2.5%), iceberg lettuce (2.4%), wheat flour (1.8%), whole milk (1.3%), round rice (0.2%) and golden apples (0.2%) has also increased.

On the other hand, among the foods that have reduced their prices on average compared to July are garlic (-0.4%), brown lentils (-0.8%), sliced mushrooms (-2.0%), onions (-3.2%), eggs (-3.5%), lemons (-4.2%), carrots (-4.2%), extra virgin olive oil (-6.0%) and seedless white grapes (-18.0%).

EGGS, 8.7% MORE EXPENSIVE

The Facua report also studies the year-on-year variation in the prices of commodities. The analysis shows that the dozen eggs is the food that has increased the most in price in the last year, with an average increase of 8.7%. The highest increase in prices between August 2025 and August 2026 has been recorded at Hipercor, where the M-L dozen of the El Corte Inglés brand has gone from 3.99 euros to 4.40 euros, 10.3% more.

Sunflower oil currently costs 4.1% more than a year ago, while garlic has become 2.4% more expensive during the same period. Wheat flour (0.9%), potatoes (0.8%), extra virgin olive oil (0.8%), macaroni (0.8%) and whole milk carton (0.2%) have also increased in price.

Of the products analysed by Facua, conference pears are the ones that have fallen the most in price in the last year. Specifically, 17.6% have done so on average. Onions accumulated a decrease of 13.2%, oranges by 6.1%, lemons by 3.7%, golden apples by 3.0%, round rice by 2.0%, iceberg lettuces by 1.8%, brown lentils by 1.2% and carrots by 1.1%.
