Fuendejalón will celebrate this weekend the second edition of its Conference on «Shaved Memory: Women and Repression in Fuendejalón». The program will recover the memory of the women who suffered repression during the Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship on August 29 and 30.
This year’s edition coincides with the 90th anniversary of the execution of María Domínguez Remón, Fuendejalón’s adopted daughter and one of the figures most linked to the democratic memory of the town. «We want these days to be a recognition and a way to dignify her memory on the 90th anniversary of her execution,» said the mayor of Fuendejalón.
The conference will focus on the specific repression suffered by women. The program recalls that, on August 29, 1936, 39 women were taken from their homes, shaved and paraded through the streets of Fuendejalón as a form of humiliation and punishment for their condition and for their family or political ties.
PROGRAMMING OF THE CONFERENCE
The activities of both days are organized by the Association of Democratic Memory. On Saturday 29, starting at 6:00 p.m., the opening of the conference will take place, followed by the dramatized reading «Voces Rapadas» and a conversation between Emilio Silva and Pura Sánchez on repression as a form of gender punishment.
The activities will continue on Sunday 30 with the Route of Memory, which will depart at 11:00 a.m. from the old prison of Fuendejalón. At 11:30 a.m. a tribute will be held in the cemetery, with the reading of a manifesto in memory of the women repressed and María Domínguez. «The great-granddaughters of these women have wanted to be part of this dignification,» said the mayor of the town.
A TRAVELING EXHIBITION
Coinciding with the conference, Fuendejalón will host the exhibition «Women in Exile: Repression and Oblivion», a traveling exhibition of 13 panels produced by the 14 de Abril Foundation with the support of the Provincial Council of Zaragoza.
The exhibition addresses the experiences of women who suffered both external exile and so-called internal exile, as well as persecution, detention, torture and deportations. The exhibition also vindicates their role in the defence of democracy, freedom and culture, as well as their contributions in areas such as science, politics, literature, journalism, arts and sport.
