While a large part of Aragon looks with concern at ageing and depopulation, there is a municipality that completely breaks that trend. It is a few kilometres from Zaragoza, has more than 15,000 inhabitants and has an average age of just 36.54 years. It is Cuarte de Huerva, the youngest town in Aragon according to the latest official data from the Aragonese Institute of Statistics (IAEST).
The data is even more striking when looking at its population pyramid. In Cuarte de Huerva live 3,377 children under 15 years of age, about 22% of the total, while only 7.83% of its residents are 65 years of age or older. An unusual demographic picture in a Community where many municipalities present just the opposite situation.
CUARTE DE HUERVA, THE YOUNGEST VILLAGE IN ARAGON
Cuarte de Huerva has 15,380 inhabitants on 1 January 2025 and has a demographic structure that is very different from that of much of Aragon. Its high presence of children and young families means that the average age of the municipality is several years below the Aragonese average.
This combination makes Cuarte de Huerva one of the main examples of demographic growth in the area of Zaragoza. Its proximity to the capital, together with the residential development experienced in recent decades, has attracted many young families and has contributed to significantly rejuvenating its population pyramid.
OTHER YOUNG MUNICIPALITIES OF ARAGON
Cuarte de Huerva is not the only Aragonese municipality with a particularly young population. In the latest IAEST comparisons, María de Huerva, La Muela, Tierz, La Puebla de Alfindén, Monflorite-Lascasas, Pinseque and Cadrete also appear among the towns with the lowest average age.
A large part of these municipalities are located in the surroundings of Zaragoza or other urban areas, where the growth of new residential areas has favoured the arrival of young people. In the face of the ageing that affects many small Aragonese villages, these towns show a very different demographic reality.
